Mariah`s Flavorful Fried Oreos

For my project, I chose to experiment the taste between three different batch of fried oreos that were made with three different mixes. Fried oreos is one of my favorite dessert, so I decided to experiment on it, plus learn more about it.

The Science of Batter

Batter is thin dough that can be easily poured into a bowl. The first batter that was used in the experiment was corn mix. Corn mix is made from the mixture of corn flour and water. Corn flour is like quicksand. Its behavior arises because of interactions between particles. That happens because when it`s pressured, the particles come together and when it`s not pressured, they`re separate. The brand "Jiffy" was used for the corn mix and contains wheat flour. Cake mix was the second batter that was used. Cake mix main ingredient is sugar. Sugar has the tendency to attract and hold onto water molecules. The sugar being in the cake mix, helps the mix make and keeps the baked goods moist. This causes the eggs and flour to form weaker bonds. Lastly, is pancake mix. Pancake mix is mainly enriched flour bleached. It contains wheat flour.

Experiment and Results

The temperature, cookies, and time were kept constant. The only difference was the batters.

Recipe and Instructions

  1. 1 cup of batter mix
  2. 2 quarts of vegetable oil for frying
  3. 1 large egg
  4. 1 cup of milk
  5. 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil
  6. Mix cookies with batter(4)
  7. Fry at 375 Degrees Fahrenheit(Turn them over)
  8. Put powder on them

Trial 1-Corn Mix

This trial turned out totally different than the other ones. It didn`t really look like a fried oreo because it didn`t have much batter. It was a dark golden brown color. The texture was hard on the outside, but creamy inside. The taste was crunchy.

Trial 2-Cake Mix

These fried oreos were golden brown. The batter was spread out wide around the cookie. It tasted soft and creamy, due to being creamy on the inside and not as hard outside as the fried oreos in trial 1.

Trial 3-Pancake Mix

The fried oreos made during this trial turned out exactly right. The batter was fully on the cookie and the batter was not spread out so wide. It was crunchy on the outside, more like smooth. It tasted delicious.

Overall, the batters had each batch of the fried oreos look different and taste different. Each batter was mixed with the same ingredients; two eggs, one cup of milk, and two teaspoons of oil. However, due to each batter being made differently within itself, they were not able to come out the same. The results are basically proven from the information given in the science of batter. Each batter is not made the same. Corn mix is made from the mixture of corn flour and water, while cake mix main ingredient is sugar and pancake mix is made with wheat flour.
